Amorim's Fatal Mistake? Taking On Wilcox and the Unassailable Executive Class

Iturns out the manager was able to withstand defeat by lower-league opposition. Survive an important European final versus one of the worst Spurs sides for many years. He could survive losing at home against domestic rivals, finishing 15th, the tactical inflexibility, laying waste to some of the club’s most promising academy products, a poor winning percentage, labeling the squad the worst the club has ever seen. Yet, there existed a single opponent with whom Ruben Amorim was not permitted to engage. You come at the sporting director, and you best not miss.

Regrettably, similar to numerous Premiership right-back in Blackburn’s championship campaign, Amorim took on Jason Wilcox and seems to have failed. The most casual observer can see the irony here: a coach who often railed his squad for failing in individual battles crumbling in the face of the intense pressure and animal charisma of a the Premier League’s most feared sporting directors.

And frankly, this whole painful saga appears to portray Jason Wilcox in a different perspective. It may have been tempting, based on his brief stint of experience with the Saints, to regard him as merely a functionary within the club's structure: an individual who owed his position largely to his close relationship with his former boss a fellow executive rather than any demonstrable skill. How mistaken we all were. By masterfully outsmarting United’s feted head coach, just as he bested the hapless Dan Ashworth earlier, he has demonstrated to be among the sport’s strategic masterminds: a tactical intellect that United’s competitors are now rightly wary.

The Strategic Conflict Over Formation and Ideology

For example, this was the director , after having been part of the leadership that hired the 3-4-3 fundamentalist the coach in the first place, was instrumental in trying to persuade Amorim to abandon his favored formation. Unsurprisingly, these entreaties faced pushback. However, such directives carry more weight when issued from the mouth with the unimpeachable football pedigree he possesses, a veteran of three England caps and a role in a title-winning side decades past.

Perhaps in time he might agree to outline his thought processes publicly. Maybe one day questions may arise regarding why the coach is walking away with full compensation, without any compensation reduction clause in place. But Jason Wilcox seldom speaks in public, and with very good reason. The real thinkers in football – individuals such as Jason Wilcox – simply operate at a level exceeding our mundane comprehension. If he ever did speak, probably we would perceive would be high-frequency signals and four-dimensional whirring. Desiring an explanation is not the same as being ready to comprehend it.

An Supreme Power In the Throne

Naturally, in training our focus on the sporting director we are obscuring the true genius behind the club's current leadership. The director is, after all, simply carrying out the directives of his ultimate line manager Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who in private has made very clear his preference for a four-man defense. According to reports, Ratcliffe has also suggested playing Bryan Mbeumo as a right wing-back. Ratcliffe is keen for the club to adopt data science and analytics. Per reports, during a leadership summit soon after his minority ownership, he declared that the team's approach of play “will be determined by this group”.

After all, Sir Jim is an expert in these intricate footballing stuff, leveraging his background in petrochemicals and yachting. Above all he is incredibly rich, and as we all know, the wealthy are the best of us: more perceptive, more wise, more tactically astute, fundamentally better. Whom else could one trust to oversee a strategic plan of austerity, the construction of a modern arena that appears a lot like someone’s leftover knitting, the signing of a new striker?

A Modern Soccer Hierarchy: Directors Above Coaches

This represents a shift that is becoming prevalent in top-tier of the game. For decades, teams mistakenly entrusted big footballing decisions to subordinate staff like managers, scouts – players themselves. Maybe previously feasible for an up-and-coming, innovative manager with ideas and drive to go into a club and implement their plan through to completion. But how many businesses have these guys set up? What number of mass redundancies have they managed? Far preferable to invest the real power where it belongs: the leadership tier, the open-necked shirt brigade, the guys with impressive LinkedIn profiles. It is wiser to decide the strategy by the directors and hire a coach who can tailor their methods to suit. If coaches were formerly chefs, they have become more like delivery personnel: not really responsible for the product, yet finally accountable if it arrives poorly or leaks out to meet standards.

Nowadays, a coach's role has become less about defining the vision and more about selling it: the receptionist on the front desk, the visible figurehead of an organisation they can do little to change. A coach at Chelsea takes a squad of very young players into the Champions League and wins two medium-sized trophies, and effectively gets sacked for talking. Wilfried Nancy sees his standing damaged whereas the people who hired him continue to make errors another day.

A Modern Corporate Game: Accountability for the Coaches

And possibly on some microcosmic level this is simply corporate governance at work: the elevation of a gilded elite who can never be wrong, whose decisions are always sacrosanct, whose errors can invariably be resolved by sacking without justification. Hire the system coach only to dismiss him for using excessively 3-4-3. Hire the process guy and then discard him for taking excessive time. And most importantly be grateful; for your modest season ticket price rises, for your new summer signings, for the fact that the grownups – regardless of their expertise – are in charge.
