Astronaut Discloses Emotional Distress Following ‘Tsunami of Harassment After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also included celebrity crewmates.

The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, recalling a phone call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on women's health research and performed experiments during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – including her lab work and astronaut training to the historic significance of her roots – was overshadowed under the deluge of misogyny.

She is best known for her pioneering work fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

Finding Solid Ground

In the time since reaching space, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose support were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she said.

She added that despite the negativity, considerable good had come out of the flight, including spotlight on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

Flight Details

The fully automated spacecraft departed its launch site in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that passed the Kármán line of space.

The team of pioneers also included accomplished professionals from various fields.
