"Any idea when you're chatting with the Haim sisters?" a text arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their fourth member."

However, there remains a key snag: The sender also longs to be Haim's additional sibling. Furthermore, we are far from alone. Several high-profile supporters have publicly begged for the position.

It's clear a special quality is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path doing sets at small eateries with their family. Now they're repeated Grammy Award contenders.

Like all the most iconic ensembles, they're a inseparable trio. Their videos often show them marching in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such pure exuberance you can't help but think, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'After your show, I got a drum kit'," says Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That is the greatest honor. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage young girls to start a band."

"And thus everyone is invited to be the next member of Haim."

Historic Recognition

The trio are speaking from home, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in for their new album, I Quit.

They're right now processing the news it's been shortlisted for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in the running for the award.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the accolade is deeply felt by the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge step," continues Alana. "But we're just thankful for the women that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The project came out of a time of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that strange in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The words track breakups and partings. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them working out in real time who they are becoming.

"I love description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to consciously practice ignoring the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That newfound confidence demanded a new sound – more raw and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Humor

The band's honesty fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic tales.

Someone left Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Path

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their standing in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an international audience.

Yet the band will always be their top commitment.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was little," concludes Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still making music."
